About Boot Shelf

My first real pair of work boots came from a warehouse store in the early nineties. Size 11 wide, the cheapest thing they had, because nobody told me it mattered. I found out it mattered by month four when the insole went flat and I had two more months of shift left on that rotation. That is roughly how this started.

I am a maintenance supervisor at a parts distribution center outside Pittsburgh. I have been on concrete floors for over twenty years. The boot rotation I keep now runs six to eight pairs through different conditions over a couple of years, and I note what changes and what holds. Some of that is curiosity. Some of it is practical: my feet have to get me through hour seven.

Weekends I usually walk my elderly mother's old Lab, a different pair on my feet each time. Softer sole, lighter shank. The contrast matters more than I expected when I started keeping notes on it.

I am not a podiatrist, not a cobbler, not anyone with an industry connection or a certification. What I have is a long memory for which boots cracked by the first hard frost and which kept their shape past two winters. More on the who is on the author page.
